Build a winter storm emergency kit before the snow flies
Do this before a winter storm warning is issued
The best time to prepare is before the watch becomes a warning. Put together a basic kit now and you won't be scrambling when the forecast turns.
Home kit
- At least three days of food and water (one gallon of water per person per day)
- Any medications and basic first-aid supplies
- Flashlights and batteries — not candles
- A way to stay warm if the power fails: blankets, warm layers, a safe backup heat source
- A charged power bank for phones
- A battery or hand-crank radio for updates
Car kit
- Blanket, hat, gloves and extra warm clothing
- Food, water and a phone charger
- Ice scraper, small shovel and sand or cat litter for traction
- Jumper cables and a flashlight
When the warning hits
Avoid travel if at all possible. If you must drive, tell someone your route. Never heat your home with a stove, oven or grill — carbon monoxide can be deadly. Check on elderly neighbours and anyone living alone.
Check whether a winter storm warning is in effect for you right now on the home page, and see what to do for your exact conditions.
This is editorial winter-weather news and guidance, not an official warning. Check your live local status on the home page or by city, and always follow your national weather agency.
